Sub:2 Marathon Relay
Holland, MI | Oct 27 @ 2pm
On Saturday, October 12, 2019, Eliud Kipchoge became the first human to ever run a marathon in under 2 hours. Inspired by his amazing achievement, 2 weeks later, 45 runners from Holland, Michigan teamed up to see if they could collectively do the same. The runners gathered at the West Ottawa High School track on October 27 and split the marathon into 210 x 200 meter relay legs for a total of 26.2 miles. Ultimately, they succeeded in their goal of matching Kipchoge's mind-boggling 1:59:40, posting a final time of 1:49:32. The super-relay team ran an average pace of 4:11 per mile.
Runners ranged in age from 8 to 55 years old and ran anywhere from 1 to 26 legs of the 210-leg relay. It was the ultimate team accomplishment. While most of the runners were able to match Kipchoge's pace for 200 meters they all marvelled that an individual was able to maintain that pace for 26.2 miles himself.
